The Federal Government has announced the release of ₦2.3 billion to federal universities across the country to clear outstanding salary and promotion arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the funds were processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) and represent Batch 8 arrears. Universities are expected to begin receiving payment alerts immediately.
Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa explained that the move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resolving long-standing welfare issues in the education sector. He added that the government is also finalising the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO).
“The Tinubu administration is determined to clear inherited backlogs and enhance the welfare of academic and non-academic staff in a transparent and sustainable manner,” Alausa said.
The Minister further disclosed that the government has approved the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) into salaries from 2026, ensuring predictable and timely payments. Funds have also been released under the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities project, with budgetary provisions made to sustain the initiative.
This intervention comes just days after ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike, raising hopes for lasting industrial harmony in Nigeria’s universities.
